Maintainer activity

9 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 11, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits.

How this project is maintained

About 9% of issues opened in the past year have never received a reply. 100% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Work labelled "web" is answered fastest, typically in about 13 hours, while "pending-op" waits about 2 months. 49% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months. 83% of issues opened in the past year have been closed, leaving a working backlog.

Detailed Description

Ente is a fully open source end-to-end encrypted cloud platform that provides alternatives to mainstream services like Google Photos and Authy.

The project addresses the need for privacy-preserving cloud storage by implementing end-to-end encryption across all client platforms and the server, ensuring that the service provider cannot access user data. The monorepo contains client applications for iOS, Android, F-Droid, Web, Linux, macOS, and Windows, along with the backend server. The cryptography has been externally audited by multiple security firms. The platform currently powers three applications: Ente Photos for photo backup and management, Ente Locker for storing documents and credentials, and Ente Auth as a two-factor authentication tool.

Ente Photos is the flagship product, offering features including three-way data replication, face detection, semantic search, private sharing, collaborative albums, and family plans. The service operates on a freemium model with ten gigabytes of free storage, though users can also self-host by cloning the repository. Developers should note that the project is a monorepo spanning multiple languages including Dart, Go, and TypeScript, which means adopting it for self-hosting requires managing infrastructure across these different technology stacks.

Almost all open issues are raised by outside users rather than the core team, indicating a substantial base of adopters reporting real-world use. Maintainers typically respond to new issues and pull requests within a few days. Work in the issue tracker is dominated by labels covering authentication, photos functionality, and desktop clients.
